The pharmacy, as an act of community service during the pandemic, discounted the Ferry-Morse packets of vegetable seed down to just 99 cents. There was a run on all the vegetables people knew what to do with, leaving the beet and asparagus on the shelves. Blue Lake bush beans were strangely disregarded, despite their edible pods.
Then, the unseasonably cold weather struck, freezing all the seeds in the ground. May had been taken for granted as recently frost-free. Now, in the middle of the month, gardens were struck by snow during the day, and deep freezes at night.
